I’m feeling super excited and nostalgic because today is the 2 year anniversary of In Spades!
I remember reflecting on my first blog anniversary and feeling so bright eyed and appreciative of every opportunity and new friendship that had come my way because of the blog. In year two, that same appreciation only runs deeper. The difference is the lens in which I see my world. While I am by no means a veteran, there is a special confidence that comes from another year of experience. The comfortable feeling of knowing that this is what I’m supposed to be doing and the future is open for me to mold.
When you find your tribe, everything changes. I treasure this feeling of community. The encouragement of my blogger friends from across the country. Becoming a regular at New York Fashion Week; witnessing the culmination of 50 years of fashion and discovering new designers that immediately stole my heart. The relationships I’ve built with brands I love and am inspired by. Being featured as a stylist, art director and influencer on dynamic projects.
As our creativity grows and transforms I think it’s important to remember we all start from scratch. I remember starting my blog in the fall of 2013 and telling no one about it because I felt embarrassed. And look at all of the wonderful things that have come out of something I was initially ashamed of! If there’s one message I can impart on anyone thinking of starting a creative project, it’s just do it. It’s really that simple. Begin. Take a note from Ira. He always fires me up.
Here’s to Year Two!
A big thank you to all my readers, peers, friends and family for your continued love and support. It means more to me than you’ll ever know.
“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
